Mentorship

I work with teenage boys and young men in a one-to-one mentorship capacity, supporting them in their home, school, and personal lives. My main role is to be someone outside the family unit your son can trust and rely on for guidance, listening, and, when it’s appropriate, advice. I will encourage and guide your son towards self-responsibility in his actions, open and clear communication, emotional regulation and coping skills, and movement in the direction of his passions. I work closely with the parents to incorporate their desires and needs for their son while maintaining the privacy of what the teen shares with me. Please see below for more details.

Includes:

  • Weekly sessions for 1.5 hours

  • Nature walks/hikes, lunch/dinner, games/activities

  • Curated to the teen’s specific interests and passions where possible

  • Going “outside the office” and into the world

Four Thresholds

The thresholds below are specific to those relationships where I’m both mentoring the teen and preparing him for his rite of passage into young adulthood. In the case where I’m mentoring a teen without the ultimate goal of a rite of passage, we still cross these first two thresholds (and possibly others) in our time together. Each relationship is unique and catered to the specific needs and goals of the family and teen.

Connection - Building mutual trust and connection; getting buy-in, “yes” to working together; identifying and discussing goals

Diving In - Deepening into conversations about life, family, self, passions; accessing the world of feelings and emotions; identifying strengths/struggles

Rite of Passage - Rite of passage ceremony: including preparatory work/conversations, discussing fears and excitements openly, calling on parents, aunties, uncles for support in this challenge; creating a clear container and arc of events

Integration- Incorporating the rite of passage into everyday life; distilling insights from time on the mountain; Looking ahead at what’s next for teen and preparing for his next phase after our work together

A Note from Jackson

Thank you for considering working with me to support your son and your family through guided mentorship. I am passionate about this work in helping teens find purpose, beauty, meaning, and connection in their lives at a young age, and I am deeply committed to being an active agent in making that happen.

A small anecdote from my own life:

As a teen myself, I struggled greatly in regulating and expressing my emotions, finding clear purpose and direction in my vision and actions, and developing a relationship to myself that was kind and loving. I spent my 20s trying to gain a deeper understanding and knowledge of these skills and ways of being. Along the way, I have been blessed to meet elders, mentors, and guides who have helped me find myself, my vision, my purpose, my community, and motivated me to take action to create the life I want. Without them, I don’t know where I’d be. They have and continue to encourage me, challenge me, lift me up, humble me, help me sort through my doubt, and give me courage to face my fears. I know firsthand the power of a guide and a mentor to open the mind and heart to new ways of being and help others discover the path towards a life that is full of meaning and purpose.

My goal in working with teens is to be that same positive force and to help teens find their inner wisdom, vision, capability, and confidence at that crucial age of development. The world needs young men with big hearts, strong vision, and a willingness and capacity to meet both the challenges and joys of life.
